DEAN - Disability Education Association NSW/ACT Inc.

Welcome to DEAN

Disability Education Association of NSW/ACT (DEAN) is a professional association established to represent the interests of staff and students in the post-secondary sector. DEAN provides members with opportunities for cross-sectoral collaboration, a forum for professional development and networking, collection & dissemination of information, one voice to promote political and social aspects of the unique and collective interests of all the constituents, and promoting the enhancement of access to education for people with disabilities.

Members receive:

  • voting rights and the right to stand for office;
  • access to an email list server for practitioners;
  • information gathering and dissemination;
  • discounts on PD Days and forums ($50 instead of $70 in 2010);
  • access to the Members only area section on the website (login required) containing PD Day presentations, handouts, resources, and much more.

For further information please visit the Membership page.

Next DEAN PD Day:

Wednesday 18th August: Mental Health: The elephant in the room for all disability workers (revised topic)

Most mental health problems begin between the ages of 15 and 25, but most are undiagnosed and untreated. They are the largest cause of death in young men.

Disability workers in education constantly meet students dealing with depression, anxiety, substance abuse or other significant mental health challenges which may be unrecognised by the student, undiagnosed by professionals, untreated, and may exist alongside another disability which is the presenting problem. This issue is too big for any of us to ignore, no matter what area of disability is our primary focus or role. We all need skills to manage it.

DEAN Strategic Planning Day

DATE: Thursday 19th August, 9.30 - 3.00 (the day after the PD Day)

VENUE: UTS City Campus, Jones Street, Building CB10, Room 05.39

COST: Free (Lunch will be provided)

As discussed at our Annual General Meeting last October, the Disability Education Association of NSW/ACT (DEAN) has been pushing the limits of what it can achieve with its current management structure, program and finances. We need to review what we do, how we do it, and what we should be doing, and we need your input!

Professional development day fees:

Our fees to date have not covered the full costs of running our PD Days. This is no longer sustainable, and our 2009 Annual General Meeting approved the following fees for 2010:

Members: $50
Non Members: $70

We believe our PD is still the best value around. Please let us know if you have concerns about this.
Only current paid-up members are eligible for the members' rate for PD days.

I hope to see you in 2010!

Regards,

Geoff Maddox
